Standard NFC or NFC DNA: which Tag should you choose?
Both connect a physical product to digital content. The key difference is whether you also need cryptographic verification of each NFC scan.
TagLink supports Standard NFC based on NTAG 213 and NFC DNA based on NTAG 424 DNA. Choose Standard NFC when you need straightforward access to a URL or digital experience. Choose NFC DNA when your project needs stronger protection against copied tag data and a way to verify scan authenticity.
The difference at a glanceโ
| Feature | Standard NFC ยท NTAG 213 | NFC DNA ยท NTAG 424 DNA |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Connect a Tag to digital information | Connect a Tag to digital information with scan authentication |
| Data used for authentication | No dynamic cryptographic scan proof | Dynamic, cryptographically verifiable data when configured for authentication |
| Verification of a genuine NFC scan | Not provided by the UID or a static URL alone | Supported through cryptographic verification |
| Protection against copied static data | Limited | Stronger protection when scans are verified |
| QR Code in TagLink | Can share the same access path | A static QR Code cannot provide the same authenticated DNA scan |
| Best suited to | URLs, identification, basic connected experiences | Product authentication and projects where clone resistance matters |
Standard NFC: simple access with NTAG 213โ
NTAG 213 can store application data such as a URL or identifier that a compatible NFC device can read. It is a practical choice when the goal is to connect a physical item to a digital Destination without cryptographic scan authentication.
In TagLink, a Standard Tag can also be paired with a QR Code that provides the same access path. This gives people another way to reach the Destination when they cannot use NFC.
What Standard NFC does not proveโ
The Tag's UID and readable content are not secrets. Seeing a UID or receiving a request to a static URL does not by itself prove that the interaction came from the genuine physical Tag. If authenticity is part of the requirement, use an appropriate verification mechanism.
NFC DNA: authenticated scans with NTAG 424 DNAโ
NTAG 424 DNA adds cryptographic capabilities to the NFC experience. When configured for authentication, it can generate dynamic data during an NFC read. A verification system can check that data to assess whether the scan is associated with a genuine Tag, rather than relying only on a copied static URL or identifier.
This makes NFC DNA suitable for product authentication and projects that need stronger protection against simple cloning. The benefit depends on proper Tag configuration and verification of the generated data.
Why a static QR Code is differentโ
A printed QR Code contains static data. It can provide access to a web page, but it cannot generate the changing cryptographic data produced during an authenticated NFC DNA read. For this reason, TagLink does not pair a static QR Code with a DNA Tag as an equivalent authenticated scan.
Use Standard NFC for simple access to digital content. Use NFC DNA when verifying the authenticity of an NFC interaction is essential to your project.
Which option fits your project?โ
Choose Standard NFC ifโฆ
You want a straightforward, cost-conscious connection to a URL or digital Destination, and a QR Code should provide the same access path.
Choose NFC DNA ifโฆ
You need cryptographic scan verification and stronger protection against copying static Tag data.
